Advertise your Online Business for free using YouTube
Sept 2009 – Introduction to YouTube
YouTube is an internet marketer’s dream tool allowing you to advertise your online business for free. YouTube has become a huge success on the web and is so simple to use. If you properly optimize your YouTube videos then your video has the potential to show up on Google search engine results above other paid for websites.
Registration
Before you get started, you will need to register an account with YouTube. It is a good idea to set your username as your brand or website name so that it is easily remembered. When deciding on making a video, ensure that you have a good subject matter and that it is original.
Making your Video
If you are new to making YouTube videos, here are some simple tips to follow:
- Make your video short and sweet. Videos should be kept to a few minutes to reduce download times for viewers.
- Prepare a script so that you get straight to the point.
- Film your video using the highest quality format you can – clear and crisp videos are much more successful than grainy videos with poor sound quality.
- Don’t make your video private or no-one will be able to view it!
- Allow people to make comments – this can help to increase the number of views your video will receive and move you up the YouTube rankings.
- Use text boxes and annotations to help promote your website. But don’t use too many as they will be distracting for viewers.
Setting Keywords
Once you have made your video, ensure that you spend some time on the keywords as this will be imperative to a successful YouTube marketing campaign:
- Do keyword research – the more time you spend on your keywords, the better your video will do on the search engine sites
- Ensure that your chosen keywords appear in the title, description and tags
- Fill the boxes with as much text as possible – the more text, the better the chance that someone will find your video
- Use an original video title and description to make yours stand out from all the other videos on a similar subject
Viewings
There is no point submitting a video to YouTube if you don’t get any viewers to it. Your aim should be to reach YouTube’s homepage under “Spotlight”, “Most viewed”, “Most discussed” and “Top Favourite Videos”. There are many factors that will influence the number of viewers your video will get:
- video title, description, tags and keywords (as discussed in the previous section)
- the number and quality of sites that host or point to your video (see next section for more information)
- your interaction on YouTube – watch other videos, make comments & subscribe to other people’s channels. The bigger your activity level on YouTube, the better your video will do. Each time you comment or rate someone else’s video, others will see this and possibly visit your channel to watch your video.
Video Sharing
The more places you embed your YouTube video and create links to it, the better your video will do.
- If you are embedding your video on an outside website, ensure that it is relevant to the site and that your video is appropriate to be on the website. There is absolutely no point embedding your video on Cats on your website about Property Rentals.
- Post your video on your blog and social networking sites as each time it is viewed through these sites, it counts as a view on YouTube and will increase your video rankings.
- Set links to your video from other pages. Ensure that these links have a strong anchor text i.e. make sure the link contains keywords related to your video.
- Send out emails to you contact list containing a link to your video. Encourage your contacts to subscribe to your channel, make comments on your video (hopefully positive ones!) and rate your video.
- Submit your video to all major video sites using a program such as Tube Mogal and Traffic Geyser. Simply enter the title, description and tags for your video and these programs will submit your video to all the major video sharing sites saving you both time and energy. They do charge a small fee for this service, but it is well worth it.
Analytics
YouTube ‘Insight’ is a free service provided by YouTube giving you all the statistics and data you could need. ‘Insight’ gives you access to information such as:
- how many page views you have
- how popular your video is
- where people found your video (a great tool if you are posting your video on multiple websites)
- what country people watching your video are from
- what sections of your video are most / least watched
All of this information will allow you to tweak and optimize your current video to maximize its success, and ensure that your next video will be even more watched by the right people.
Conclusion
A YouTube video properly optimized can outrank major websites on search engine result pages. If you follow the guidelines above, you will soon reap the rewards of appearing at the top of the list – all for free!
