The essentials of Teacup Chihuahuas!
In the last few years, Teacup Chihuahuas have become very popular, but are they a suitable dog fo you?
Before we get into that, lets look at the issues surrounding the name “teacup chihuahuas”. The controversy simply revolves around the fact that “teacup chihuahuas” as a breed do not exist. Expressions such as “teacup” and “miniature” chihuahua have been coined by breeders to describe smaller than normal chihuahuas.
What seems to have compounded the problem is that breeders have been selectively breeding small chihuahuas to create these smaller chihuahuas. There is a general perception that smaller chihuauhas in a new litter of pups are genetically inferior in some manner. The pups from these smaller chihuahuas may be prone to an additional number of health issues and disorders.
In my view, this is no different to the selective breeding of animals that humans have been involved in for generations. Whether you agree with the practice or not is a different issue!
This said, for the right people and environment, teacup chihuahuas are the perfect pet.
What is the best environment for teacup chihuahuas then?
Due to their small size, households with lots of activity may not be suitable for a new teacup chihuahua. If you do have young children, consider finding a small, quiet space for your new teacup chihuahuas, at least until they settle into their new homes.
You may also want to think about removing any heavy furniture from rooms where your teacup chihuahuas will be spending a lot of time.
What is the best way to buy teacup chihuahuas?
My first recommendation is NOT to buy a tea cup chihuahua online. When selecting a teacup chihuahua (as with any animal) make sure that you see the puppies with their parents. This will ensure that there are no genetic issues to worry about.
Check that the eyes of your teacup chihuahua look bright and alert. Also, look for lively puppies that plays well with others.
Check to ensure that your teacup chihuahua is up to date with her shots, has been completely weaned and is the right age to start her new life with you!
